My research seeks to understand the processes underlying the origin, resilience and adaptability of biodiversity, to be able to predict how biodiversity will respond to environmental change. To achieve this, my research synthesizes knowledge of biological processes across the fields of community ecology, ecosystem ecology, metabolic ecology, ecological stoichiometry and evolutionary genetics.

Evolutionary ecology of ecosystem resilience

Although environmental change triggers both ecological and evolutionary responses, the framework used to assess ecosystem resilience has lacked the evolutionary component thus far. To contribute towards the closure of this gap, I have developed the first generation of models that include evolutionary processes.

Ecological diversification is thought to have given rise to much of the diversity of life on earth. To understand the origin of biodiversity, it is therefore fundamental to identify the factors facilitating or constraining ecological diversification.

Understanding how environmental change affect the developmental capacity of organisms to complete their life-cycle is essential for predicting how species and ecosystems respond to environmental change. I study how environmental stressors, by altering the performance of organisms in different life stages, affect population persistence and community stability.
